I guess he needs to work on his math then.

become Billy Gillispie's Chris Lofton?

Not our recruit but... | ||

Detroit signed another big guy with potential and a high ranking...
Jason Bennett was the #30 prospect coming out of school in '06. He played one season at Kansas State for Huggy Bear and then went juco this past season. He is 7' 3" with great shot blocking and defensive skills. Detroit is getting much bigger Again, rankings coming out of high school mean nothing after a few years, but the Bennett signing is another big pull this late in the game for McCallum. He could be a big hurdle in the middle for Howard next year, not to mention somebody tough on the boards. |

Yeah, but ya' can't teach 7-3, no matter how long ya' try.
I bet that cat can put away the budweiser. Keep him away from the ref's lockerroom at halftime. There's only enough for me and my co-workers, if you know what I mean, and I think you do. |

Like I've said before, size is at a premium when it comes to the HL, so any big man with some skill can have an impact. And before we start throwing out names, keep in mind that this kid was significantly better coming out of high school than Rolf, Vandermeer, Smalligan, etc. A stat not mentioned was his averaging over 3 blocks per game at juco. I'm not saying he is going to log 36 minutes and average 20 & 20, but throw him out there on Matt Howard and put another 6-8 or 6-10 guy on the other block, and you've got some interesting matchups that we haven't seen in league play in a long time. |

I have read that this particular player had serious grade concerns at KSU, which was the real cause of his transfer to CC, where he put up those numbers. As
ranked by US News, Kansas State is the 2nd worst
"national" college in the country. I kind of doubt a player who can't cut it academically at literally one of the worst colleges in the
country is a good candidate for staying eligible at a private school, in Detroit no less, especially playing for a lax disciplinarian coach. In short, I really
doubt Howard plays him more than once, if that much.

We all know that McCallum is rolling the dice at Detroit. He is going to bring in players with character and grade issues. In some ways, it's not a whole
lot different to Watson. He brought in a lot of questionable players, but his rapport and discipline (early on) worked with those teams.
If the players stay focussed, Detroit can be very good. Everything we talk about in this thread is based on potential. Mack has the "potential" to be a stud at Butler. The same holds true for the players McCallum is bringing to Detroit. |

He's had a very good recruiting class this offseason, but it was under some very extreme circumstances. Picking up transfers with a bare bones team is one
thing - consistently recruiting players to play at Detroit is another... It can be done, and he might be very successfull in the long run there, but with his
background you'd have to think with any success that he'll be on the "hot" list for openings. I wouldn't go crowning him as the savior of
Detroit basketball just yet.

pickups (and maybe the transfer to Valpo), I don't think any team in the league has brought in more potential talent to make them competitive than the
Titans. And, personally, I think that is a good thing for the league because of their historical success through the late 90's and early 00's. I have
always considered them to be the biggest HL rival because of some of those great battles.

Just an update: I am fairly certain that news concerning Patrick Bade committing to Purdue will come out this evening. Just tea leave-reading right now, but
let's just say I'd be less shocked if the Padres won the series this year than this not happening....
Also, IU just signed a random, foreign big man I've never heard of and Jordy Hulls from Bloomington. From all accounts, Hulls has grown dramatically as a player this summer. That said, Hulls was considered a "mid major" kind of pg throughout his junior year. I had him pegged for Miami. If I am an IU fan, Im actually hoping Crawford and McGee leave, Crean has sort of wasted a number of his scholarships. (Jobe averaged 3+ points and 3+ rebounds a game)
