Posts: 701 (03/04/09 02:27 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None All the talk about bad fans and the pending post season, as well as some chatter about the Florida game in '07 got me thinking about '03... I think the game against Louisville was my favorite Butler memory of all time. It may even supersede "The shot heard 'round Broad Ripple" on my all time scale. Any way, I was living in Ross Hall, we were all gathered around the TV. When the final shot sank and Butler had offed UofL to move onto the Sweet 16, and you could literally hear the entire campus erupt. It was uncanny, the collective screams and shouts of excitement from anyone on campus with a pulse. After that we all just went crazy in the hall ways until we realized everyone was pouring out onto Hampton to join in the ruckus down near Schwitzer. I remember sprinting past police blocking off Clarendon and a row of news trucks to cover the frakas that broke out after that game. It was amazing to be an undergrad out on Hampton Dr. going crazy and sharing excitement with what felt like the entire student body. I wish the undergrads could get an experience like that, I would credit that moment as the point in which I went from being a good Butler basketball fan, to being a die-hard true blue Butler basketball nutcase. Posts: 557 (03/04/09 02:38 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I was at Birmingham for those games with bu97 and pdth and our wives (not bu97's). When Miller hit the teardrop against Miss. St., and the game was over, the team stormed to our area of fans, and you could read Brandon mouthing "Thank you!! Thank you SO MUCH!". I've never felt so much a part of a team's success that I didn't play for or coach. Easily my favorite BU basketball memory, and I can instantly visualize it.

Brandon Miller's floater in the lane in '03 to knock off Mississippi St. Then realizing "oh my god, we need a hotel room in Alabama!!!". 2. The absolute dismantling of Wake Forest in 2001. Kansas City was fun as well. 3. The comeback against Louisville in '03. The entire place was filled with Louisville fans, but Darnell just kept shutting them up. After we won, there was probably 500 of us chanting sweet 16, the rest of the building was silent. 4. Watching the Old Dominion game in '06 after watching the first game and saying "damn that freshman for Davidson is good!" 5. Greasy Vazquez (should be on urban dictionary) whining after losing to us in '06. Eh, last year was pretty fun as well. YEAH!!!

Probably didn't get as rowdy on campus after that win when compared to the Louisville win. But I wouldn't know, I was celebrating with the band in Buffalo To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And, at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between, plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big "thing." This is truth, to me.

I lived in Resco at the time and it was awesome when we partied in the street after the win. My all-time fav is when we waitied for the team at Hinkle and they all spoke to the fans in the gym. This was before it was a planned event like it has been recently. I just about went nuts when Joel said "I came to Butler for one reason...to win a National Championship!" I didnt care that he was lying at the time. The whole trip to Albany with my buddy was pretty frickin awesome too. That whole postseason is my best memory.

I remember watching Miller hit that shot (I still don't know HOW!) and going crazy, I'm not gonna lie, I think that clinched Butler for me :P. Miller drives, the one hander GOOD! To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And, at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between, plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big "thing." This is truth, to me.

It was the first time I'd ever attended an NCAA Tournament game. The atmosphere was incredible, and we had the entire Illinois section cheering for us by halftime. The outcome was heartbreaking, but it was an unforgettable weekend.

But I wouldn't know, I was celebrating with the band in Buffalo Let's be honest though, Buffalo was a toilet. I remember going to a BW'3 after beating Old Dominion to watch some of the other games. All of the TV's were on the Buffalo Sabers game. YEAH!!!

I was in B'ham for the games against State and Louisville. And yes, I am a Butler alum but come from a HUGE Ole Miss family (the only one not to go there) so playing, talking s**t to State fans and then beating them at the end was absolutely priceless for more reasons than one in my heart. Pouring into 5 points after that to wreck my liver was fun too. The Louisville game was awesome as well, but beating state on a final shot was pretty neat. Beating Maryland two years ago was pretty awesome as well. I was at the downtown Hooters in Memphis watching the game. For some reason there were a slew of Maryland fans at the table next to mine. So, needless to say it was a drunken debacle of trash talking. When Butler won it, two beers showed up at my table for me and my buddy, asked who they were from, the waitress said "the maryland boys saying congratulations". Thought that was pretty classy. The most hair rasing moment of my life as a BU fan was in St Louis though. We had scattered tickets and my best friend and I sat together behind the basket florida was shooting at in the second half. That was one of the most entertaining games ever. Right before the lineups were announced, my buddy looked at me and said "there is no place I would rather be than right here right now with you" and I looked at him and agreed and when they announced our team, it was just so special. Whatever, the game was unbelievable, and deep in the second half, when the Duck fans and the UNLV fans were on their feet non stop cheering their hearts out for Butler, it was such a great feeling. Yes we came up short, but it is my most memorable moment.

Beating Wake Forest meant we were no longer a speed bump for some team in the NCAAT. Beating Louisville meant we had arrived as a program recognized by people who were knowledgeable about the game. Have to go with Wake. They say the first time is the sweetest (my apologies to the 61-62 team, but I did not experience that) and I would have to agree. Plus, the way we shredded Wake Forest was something to see. Nothing cheap about that victory. The refs couldn't be blamed. No bad bounce, foul trouble or injury led to Wake's loss. Wake Forest was just overmatched. Completely overmatched. I watched it on TV, stunned. Very happy, but stunned at the magnitude of the margin. It was 43-10 at half! Think about that. Holding a team to 10 points and being up by 33 at half time. In the NCAAT. Against an ACC team. I remember wondering if I had somehow stumbled into the Twilight Zone.

As an aside, I love this thread. Especially when you think about teams that have coach little k as their coach and the favorite postseason memories from the past decade are, "remember that one year we won our first round HL tourney game and then almost won our next one? That was amazing."

He called my son for some tips about Butler, since my son was playing them in the conference on a regular basis. My son tried to tell him how complicated Butler's game was and how to attack it. The coach was impatient and did not want more than a brief comment or two. Maybe if he could have done it over that coach would have listened much more! Big Chill

Once everyone started to notice what was going on and was aware that I was cheering for them, they all jumped on my bandwagon. After the game everyone was asking where is Butler??? "Is Butler in Pennsylvania??" Anyway, for sure my most memorable moment!

Just the thought of him prancing around during warmups, I kept thinking "there's a guy I'd like to get in a fight with." And I'm a pacifist. However, I think my favorite was the Florida game in St. Louis. There were so many Butler fans there (not just ANTI-Florida fans) and the pregame atmosphere beforehand in St.L's watering hole district was awesome. Saw many friends I hadn't seen since they were in undergrad. We really had a rocking fan section in the Edward Jones Dome for that one.

Amid the haunting chants of the MSU fans who filled at least half of the arena, I was a little intimidated. Late in the second half one of the greatest moments in Butler basketball happened. It is obscure, but important. Someone or something was on our side that day. A ball on the floor rolled slowly between two MSU players' legs. Both players should have had it. There was no way they couldn't pick it up, but they didn't. Monserez picked it up in the corner and shot it in for 3 points we shouldn't have had. That changed the momentum of the game, and Brandon's moment was the icing. I sat next to a couple of UAB season ticket holders during the game who kept asking me, "do they always play this slow?" I told them Butler did whatever it took to win. They were on their feet cheering for BU in the last minute. They'd never seen anything like it. Watching the replay again and again is great, because of the announcers' simply repeating "Butler, Butler...." after Brandon's shot and the clock ran out.

The hotel we found was so bad a girl travelling with us refused to shower there so we had to go to a different hotel friends were staying at so we could shower!!! All time favorite GAME moment was the Louisville game. However, driving the RV (Recreational Vehicle) to NY for the Sweet 16 was a blast and the atmosphere there was awesome, just not the outcome.

Everybody I knew from campus pulled an all-nighter to drive over. I drove a Florida-Birmingham-Indy-Birmingham-Indy route all in the span of 3 days for that 2003 run. The to-and-from Birmingham trip on that Sunday was a classic. 16 hours in a car with 7 people. Totally worth it. But after all of that, I think the Wake Forest game is my most memorable. Our crowd wasn't so much loud as much as we were in complete shock. Nothing can accurately describe the beat down of that half. I actually thought about that while watching ESPN today. Lunardi was talking about how Cincy played their way out of the tourney this past week, and mentioned the embarassing 40-17 score Syracuse put on them over the weekend. If that was embarassing, what is 43-10?
