I'm curious to hear the board's views on the current BCS scheme, particularly in light of the report that the BCS yesterday officially rejected the
MWC's alternate proposal for conducting the bowl games/national championship. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4285164 Do you think the current system is
reasonable/fair/lawful? Would you rather see a playoff system or some other modified system? It seems to me that everybody (except the AQs) is always
complaining about the current system being rigged, but I haven't heard of a feasible alternative proposal.
(Yes, this is off topic, but perhaps we can just call it an opportunity to have a sports-related discussion even in the offseason. Or alternatively, college
basketball commentators routinely refer to basketball teams as "BCS" or "Non-BCS", which seems to bring it tangentially on-topic. In fact,
seems to me that the BCS AQs have so effectively rigged the system that it bleeds over into basketball in a way that benefits those conferences at the bottom
line and ultimately hurts programs like Butler's. But I digress.)

Great topic. I don't think you will see a change until enough big time programs have been the "odd team out" for the national championship like LSU was a couple of years ago and Texas (?) was this year. The NCAA has always surprised me in that the largest revenue sport is not controlled by them. Until the big dawgs are willing to share some of the pie, I think we will be debating this 50 years from now.

But it seems that the self-proclaimed big dawgs have rigged it so that they can never really be odd man out, if for no other reason than the AQ conferences
guarantee themselves big $$$ regardless of their bowl games or on-field successes. Also, I don't know this to be true but have heard that college
basketball post-season is more lucrative than college football season. Perhaps a plus for the playoff system? For all of our complaining each year about the
NCAA tourney selection results/seeds, it seems great compared to BCS.

It is technically open to everyone so it's not illegal. Is the deck stacked in favor of the BCS conferences? Absolutely. The fans and the small guys get
screwed, but if they thought they could make more money with a tournament they would do it. We should all get over it, Butler's football team will never
make the BCS title game.

OP answer: Playoff system. D2 and D3 can pull it off, so D1 should have no problems. Start with 7 conference champs and select 9 at large teams. The BCS bowls
can rotate which round and/or matchup they sponsor or host.

1. Coors Light for every day enjoyment. Any flavor Abita brewery beer, especially Abita Amber and Jokamo IPA. Also love Fat Tire.
2. Brunettes 3. Phi Delt-and yes, did kick the Sigma Chi's asses every year at Chariot, and it was great. But now lots has changed...I think they are back on campus, but, not sure what the house is like now. As far as the BCS, it is I guess the best alternative to a championship, but it has slighted football so much that teams in C-usa, MWC, WAC, MAC start things like recruiting already miles behind the BCS conferences. The great players will never go to a school they know they will never play in a big bowl, except for the occasional Boise or Utah. I think it hurts college football more than helps. I would do a 16 team tourney with all conference champs and the rest at large, play the first rounds at the higher seed's home field. The for the rest, you would have 7 games. Quarters-Cotton Bowl (er, what is the new stadium called?), Gator Bowl, Cap One Bowl, Fiesta. Semis-Orange, Rose Finals-FedEx Field/Stadium in D.C. Of course rotate the biggest stadiums for the final yearly, but these should be the stadiums considered. NO DOMES. |
