Shelvin |
Lead | |
|
As most of you know I have been on Shelvin's bandwagon from day one & have stated that eventually I thought this would be "Shelvin's
Team". That was not meant to say Matt's or Gordon's skills were not equal to or even better than Shel's. My thinking (jmo) has been I want
this team to win it all and to do that a team must have great guard play. There has been a lot of speculation about which players are going to improve the most
over the summer--there is no reason to think that shel will not improve as well. Butler has had some truly great guards obrien (i saw play with the olympians
as a 10 yr old), plump, fitzgerald, jackson,AJ, green & a few I'm leaving out---I don't know if he will or not, but I think this kid has the
potential to be the best of them all. The reason--bigger & stronger --a pro point body. When I look at all the major programs (unc,ku,ucon,ky,etc) I do not
see any guard who can dominate this kid. I believe he will shoot, drive, dish, and get to the line with the best of the best when we start the tournament run,
this year or next. I may be wrong, but this is what I see in this young (think about it) man.
Offense is fickle, but defense comes every night.

If you are old enough to remember the Olympians & Buckshot, Plump, and Cox they you're just about the Senior member of this board! Do you remember when
the Olympians played in Hinkle?

WAJC69---Yes---I'm pretty sure it was my 1st trip to Hinkle (in those days the Butler Fieldhouse) was to see the Olympians--my dad took me must have been
1951 or 52--I was probably 10 or 11---It was love at 1st sight--Hinkle is the best bb palace anywhere and to me, when I get there its like coming to Mecca. The
Olympian's as I remember had 2 Kentucky boys who were in the Olympics (I think) hence the name of the team when it was formed--only played here 2 or 3
years--some scandal I believe & the team moved--to Rochester maybe. Buckshot played on the team also---only 5'9'' but could drop them in from
long range.
Offense is fickle, but defense comes every night.

WAJC69,
I remember seeing the Olympians play the Minneapolis Lakers and George Mikan at Hinkle. I also saw a few Kautsky games. My first BU game was in 1947. they had Buckshot, Charlie Maas, Jimmy Doyle, John Barrowcliff, Bob Evans, Jerry Cranny to name a few. Would take take the Crosstown bus on 30th St and transfer at Meridian to the Field House. |

The Olympians were founded in 1949 to replace the Indianapolis Jets. The Olympians were led by University of Kentucky alumni Alex Groza and Ralph Beard, both of whom were key contributors on the gold medal winning 1948 US Olympic basketball team. Olympic team members Wallace Jones and Cliff Barker (both also Kentucky alumni) also played on the team. An Olympic alternate and UK grad, Joe Holland, played forward for the Indianapolis team through the 1952 season. After the 1951 season, Groza and Beard were suspended from the NBA for life by commissioner Maurice Podoloff when the players admitted point shaving during their college careers. The Olympians finished with a 28-43 record in 1953, and folded after that season. The Olympians compiled a 132-137 record in four seasons in the NBA. The Olympians still hold the distinction of being the winning team in the longest game in NBA history - they were the 75-73 victors in a six-overtime game against the Rochester Royals in a game played on January 6, 1951. The Indianapolis Jets were a Basketball Association of America team based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The team lasted for one season and was later replaced by a new franchise. The Jets joined the BAA after playing in the National Basketball League as the Indianapolis Kautskys. The team was one of four (along with the Minneapolis Lakers, Rochester Royals, and Fort Wayne Pistons) that jumped to the BAA for the 1948-49 season. However, they folded after the season and were replaced by the Indianapolis Olympians. |

Sounds like he is thriving at the point guard position with that team. I hope the coaching staff is taking notes. Would love to see the ball prmarily in his
hands this coming season.

I fully expect Nored to continue to develop into a very solid ball handler and distributer, and I think he will be the leader on the court that we need from our point guard. From the 2, Mack will be freer to do all of the things he does so well--shoot, drive, pull up midrange, pass, rebound, etc. Mack was stronger with the ball in his hands than anyone last year, but I think our chance for greatest success will be with Nored at the point and Mack at the 2. |

I've always thought our best teams were when we had two guys playing guard who could both play point (Miller/Jackson, Green/Graves). Assuming that Nored
and Mack both improve between their freshman and sophomore years as most college players do (Nored his shooting, Mack his consistency), look out. What
difference does it make who the coach calls our "1", if both guys can do the job?

I completely agree Shark, the best teams have had multiple dudes be able to handle the ball. I just hope with the size and talent of this year's bunch, the
powers that be allow for a big lineup to play. Imagine this...Jukes and Howard together, with Hayward, Mack and Stigall on the perimeter? Bang bang bang from
threes, and if Howard and Jukes can command attention, you got open looks all day long. This is nothing against Nored, but think about surrounding the
perimeter like that. Dammit there are multiple combinations we can use. When do hoops start? I am sick of the Cubs, and although I have season tix to Ole Miss
football, and they prob will be top 10 this year, I am ready for hoops!

BUShark96 wrote:I agree 100% with your comments. I don't know if Ronald and Shelvin have watched video of the playing abilities of Miller/Jackson and Green/Graves. I hope that they have. Jackson, in particular, was one great ball handler. In fact, he could boast that he was guarded by an opposing coach during a game (Mike Davis/IU....Butler wins 66 to 64). There were times when Davis was way on the court when Jackson was bringing the ball up the court.

That kid knows how to go to the hole, dish and pull up and pop when it's right.
