With the cramping Shelvin experienced in at least 2 of the last 4 games last year, would a year-wide reduction in minutes help him be more explosive for the minutes he is in there? And, I don't think Grant plays much either way. We have enough people who can shoot and defend, we don't have to choose anymore. I don't think Horan would play very much for this team, and I don't think Grant shoots or defends as well as Horan did. I'll go the unpopular route and say that Jukes will surprise this year. I have nothing to base it on other than seniors typically play better in our system than you'd expect, going back to Andy Hirschy and Bjorn Gieseck.

If his shot gets better I could see him pulling minutes off the ball in place of Hahn or Vanzant at times, I guess, but his defense will still probably be suspect and his handle is still iffy. Although, with Chase coming off his redshirt, I really don't think there's any way he sees more than 6 minutes this year. Still, if he could actually make some of the shots he takes...that would be nice.

He's a RS-Junior who played 6 minutes per game last year and has been recruited over. His chance of making an impact during his last two seasons are slim-to-none when the guys in front of him are younger/more athletic.

I cant imagine why anyone would walk away from such a great situation (scholarship, on a great team, at a great school). Even if he doesn't have a large role at the moment, while some people on message boards might make such a comment, I guarantee you nobody on the team would ever suggest such a thing. He still has the potential to have a niche on this team, and if he can regain that shooting stroke that he had, he could be a weapon for us. Just "hanging it up" is not how these guys are built; they compete, and especially here, they value the contributions that each person brings. I'm not sure exactly who you are (I have my guesses), but something tells me you haven't competed athletically at a very high level, and if you had, you wouldn't say something like that. Some mop up duty maybe in league play and against some of the earlier lower tier teams. And that is no slight on him. But, there is simply better talent above him on the depth chart that will eat up all the minutes. If he can find his stroke and just be a bomber from deep, that still won't warrant many minutes. I agree with most that being a part of this team this year and next will be a great experience for him one way or another, not to mention he is getting a fine education. But I just don't see minutes for him, especially with the type of competition we will be facing the first month of the season.

Offense is fickle, but defense comes every night.

Surely everyone will be given a chance to shine in practice, but to be sure, this is a guard dominant and heavy team, and there just won't be enough minutes to go around unless of course there are injuries. I am expecting a solid contribution from Stigall and SVZ provides energy off the bench, and you know he will give Zach some minutes, so, just don't know where he gets minutes. Especially if Brad decides (which I think we are all in agreement) to play big at times with Hayward at the 2.

We need a third feared shooter out there and hopefully someone if not Ron can fill that need. Last year at times the offense got stagnant because there were just not enough threats out there. But if you can find one more shooter to go with Hayward and Mack, then you have three dart throwers surrounding a great low post player. That spells good to me.
