MidMajority.com Launches Season Six |
Lead | |
|
For those of you up late tonight, the Midmajority.com website is launching their Season Six with a countdown to their launch. They will begin with a prologue
that you can find at the link below. It will be interesting how they view Butler this season as the Bulldogs come in the preseason rankings at #10 and #11.
Last year there was a lot of content and talk about Butler on this website and I hope it continues this season. 72 minutes and counting for those of you
following along tonight.

It's kind of humorous you would say "they". Kyle Whelliston IS midmajority.com. But thanks for the heads up. I'm sure Kyle will be visiting
Hinkle as many times as he can.

Now, now...Damon Lewis is doing some writing for Mid-Majority this year, so "they" can be accurate.
The prologue is an interesting read. Not sure any of us could suck it up and go through another season after everything he went through last year. He is offering a "Bally Club" this year that will have an exclusive message board and other benefits. It's only $6. If you read his (or their) website on a semi-regular basis, join and help him out. Remember, he doesn't have an ESPN salary to pay his way this year.

Oops... wrong thread.
Boy, Kyle has had one rough year+ stretch... I hope that in some small way, a good run by Butler this year can help further legitimize his work, and provide some opportunities for interviews, etc. that can help spread the word of his website.
David Woods, a voice of reason:
National publicity is good for Butler's program, of course, but remember this: The Website reporters who cover college basketball are compelled to write about something in the off-season, and Butler is the flavor of the month. Such publicity is also a reminder of how outrageous preseason expectations have become for what is essentially a sophomore/junior team. I'm actually more concerned about Butler's fans than the team.

What has Whelliston been doing since he was fired by ESPN in January?

Traveling and covering college basketball by being able to use donated funds for expenses, if I remember correctly.
Schedules, schedules - class, practice and season.

Why was he fired? I always enjoyed his work and his stuff on ESPN.com introduced me to his website.

I would say they should have just gotten rid of Jay Bilas and Digger Phelps but I don't work in Bristol and after this incident I'm rather glad I don't. My friend said it took him two seconds to figure out why those who work there call it a campus. Apparently, everyone there behaves like they never graduated. He also told me that those who run ESPN.com believed most of his best writing went to midmajority and not ESPN. The World Wide Leader never would have fired him for that it just made it easier. The straw the broke the camel's back was the story he posted on midmajority about his impending dismissal. Self-fulfilling prophecy or just incredible irony there, take your pick. Either way, Dana O'Neil does some coverage of the midmajors and Andy Katz will likely do a few stories about our Bulldogs since we are ranked so high, but basically ESPN covers what will get people to watch TV, listen to radio, visit their website or subscribe to their magazine. Unfortunately, more people watch, listen to and read about Kentucky, Indiana, Duke, Kansas, UCLA, North Carolina et cetera. For most, college basketball and football are nothing but NFL and NBA minor leagues; figuring out who is eventually going to get paid to play. Finally, and maybe this is the biggest reason of all, Kyle works in an incredibly broken system of journalism in which people are no longer willing to pay for information. That's a whole other story, but let's be honest all of these had something to do with the firing of the best writer ESPN ever had.

that new post was by Damon Lewis of the HLN and Butler alum.
Damon - great post. I enjoyed reading it. I won't mind too much if you have a heavy focus on Indianapolis on MidMajority. |
