Garrett Butcher redshirt? |
Lead | |
|
Is it safe to assume Garrett Butcher is redshirting at this point?

I assumed that he had not yet fully recuperated from illness, and that while he did dress for the game, Stevens did not play him as a precautionary measure
(though this does not mean that he will not redshirt, just why he likely did not play this afternoon).

At Sunday's post game interview Coach Stevens said Butcher was sick. It's too early to make assumptions. Let's wait until we see a regular season
game next week.

I would be shocked if Butcher is redshirted. I think he will be a very important sub this year.

I will be surprised if he does not redshirt. It's unlikely that he's been so sick that it keeps him from both preseason games which were a week apart.
If he is that sick, let's say a bad case of the swine, there's no way Stevens would let him sit on the bench. It would be a smart for both him and the
program if he redshirts.

I think he will redshirt. It makes sense for the future if he does. Willie and Jukes will be gone next season and Butch would have a big opportunity to play a
major role.

It would be surprising, I think, considering Khyle Marshall plays the exact same position.
ESPN: No 3 programs burst onto the scene in the last 20 years the way UConn, Gonzaga and Butler have in college basketball. |

Not playing again I think tells a lot. Not sure the reasoning behind it...but I am leaning towards redshirt at this point. But that is pure speculation.

Butcher redshirting means that you take a 6 freshmen in '08 and 1 freshman in '09 and by redshirting Butcher, Stigall and Kampen you essentially make
it the equivalent of 3 freshmen in '08 and 4 freshmen in '09.
In Butcher's case, the main thing to focus on is his value to the team today (compared to other options on the bench) vs his value and contribution during his fifth year, potentially as a starter. I'm not saying it's a done deal, but it looks pretty likely.

This would be a tough decision. He has experience and a great upside. I feel he is a better all around player than Jukes. In past years we would have need him
too much to even consider the red-shirt route.

David Woods gives the answer:
DW: Coach Stevens said Butcher is recovering from his illness, and that Butcher likely would NOT redshirt.

My opinion is that we should not sacrifice the present for the future, at least not when we are this good. If you're struggling and rebuilding, then yeah,
maybe you try to load up a bit to make a run. But with this team, if you think that Butcher is good enough to contribute--and I personally think he is--then I
don't think you should redshirt him. If he is better than Jukes, then he should play over Jukes. With a team this talented and potentially capable of
making a nice run, we should not sacrifice the present to look a couple years ahead. With how well the program is going and the recruiting skills that Stevens
and Co. have shown, I don't really think there is a need to stockpile and hedge our bets, so to speak. Let's go all in and then keep reloading. I
think we're capable of doing that.

A possibility is that Stevens is putting it on the table and leaving the decision up to Butcher. As far as Butcher being better than Jukes.... I'm not a taker. Some day Butcher may be better and if he doesn't redshirt that day may be this year. Last year I would have taken Jukes over Butcher. |

I don't want him to...but it seems that it is a possibility. But, to yall's point, don't redshirt him, have every talented dude available,
available. Let's play for today.

Personally I dont think it makes sense to redshirt him with the addition of Fromm and Marshall next year. Although I guess we are losing veasley and jukes...
hmm this could be a bad situation for Butcher.

Hopefully he doesn't.......I thought for sure this would be a breakout year for him

The way I look at it is I don't see us winning any games this year because Butcher is playing over someone else. But during his fifth year, I can see him
playing a different roll with Butler winning because of his contributions. I'll support whatever decision is made.

It could go either way and I am not sure if it would matter a whole lot. Bottom line is that with Smith's emergence, and I would assume Jukes being ahead
of him in the rotation...there just aren't going to be many minutes for Butcher this year. Like probably, maybe 5-8 a game. If the coaches are looking to
the future, and thinking that this kid can be a hell of a contributor for this team with a little more development, sitting him this year will not hurt IMO.
But, the flipside is you have two guys coming next year at forward to join the cast of characters already there and where will the minutes come from then? Will
the minutes be the same as this year? It's a nice luxury to have this depth which causes this to even be an option. I guess we will find out soon enough.
