Exhibition Game 2 vs. Taylor: 68.9% (17-25)
We were a 72.4% Free Throw Shooting Team last year. Is this 65% FT% through two exhibition games cause for concern?

Absolutely is a cause for concern, but maybe not yet. To me these poor shooting efforts could be just a slight lack of focus as they're playing teams who
they are so much more talented than. However, these games are preparation for the regular season, and if you can't focus during these "practice"
games, then it has a good possibility of carrying over to the real thing, and with their tough schedule, they don't have much room for error in this area.

No...Matt, Gordon, and Shelvin are all 75+% free throw shooters and will be shooting the majority of them...I think they'll be fine.

2 meaningless games + bench players getting more PT than usual = sample size for the win

Bench player, starter, sixth man, doesn't matter. Scholarship D1 athletes need to be counted on to hit their free throws. Small sample size? Maybe. But if
this pace keeps up, it will cost us in tight games.

Neon Boudreaux wrote:Since when did "bench players getting more PT than usual" have an affect on starters standing alone at the Free Throw line? Do bench players standing in the lane play a role in the outcome of Matt Howard's free throw percentage? That post was not an explanation for Matt Howard's 6/9 shooting, Nored's 2/4 and/or Hahn's 1/3... Bottom line is we'll need top notch Free Throw Shooting to win the Anaheim Tournament, to beat OSU, to beat Xavier, etc. |

Maybe @ small sample size? lol...
Number of free throws shot last year: Howard-229 Nored-64 Not arguing the free throw shooting will have to be better than 65% in the regular season, but a cause for concern after 2 exhibition games is a little much. Then again, if this what we are complaining about, things aren't so bad. |

It is the same team from last year, so the fact that it was exhibition against lower level opponents, and the fact that it is a small sample size, are probably
the main culprits behind the lower FT %'s, give it time, I have a hard time believing that the same players from last year would be shooting a percentage
that much lower...

Andrew Smith was on the team last year?
Smith actually wasn't the problem - 9/13 (69.2%). Others were worse... |

I understand that Smith was not on the team, but as you stated yourself Smith was not the issue.

I'm confused by the meaningfulness of exhibition games, after reading this thread and the "New Additions" thread.

Title--I agree--Exhibitions games are meaningful only to the coaching staff. Teaching and assessment under quasi game conditions. I think this staff is very
good, but we will only know results after 3 or 4 games. Defensively we should know where we stand after Northwestern. jmo
Offense is fickle, but defense comes every night.

I think that exhibition games are meaningful to the fans in that we get to see the team play before the regular season starts. I think they are good for the
players because they play against different faces. Exhibition games are meaningful to the coaches in that they get to experiment with different lineups, etc.
Exhibition games are also good for Depauw and Taylor.
However, with these exhibition games behind us, we still do not know how we will perform against true Division 1 opponents. These opponents know about us, and their rosters are filled with great players who have speed, quickness, bulk, physical strength, etc. In the end, I believe we will perform just fine.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think we're ready for a big game yet. If we come out flat on Saturday, then Northwestern is going to be really tough.
The first five minutes against Davidson will reveal a lot. This team has great potential, but I'm not seeing the mental toughness of past teams. We need to
come out on fire and make a statement early that we are deserving of all the hype. Didn't see any of that in the exibition games.

Neither exhibition opponent scored more than single digit points in the first 10 minutes of their respective games... how are you supposed to show mental
toughness when you're grinding the opposition into pulp? And we trotted out many lineups/players that likely won't see major minutes. I was not blown
away by the exhibitions, but I am not sure one team that has shown mental toughness through their exhibition season. Maybe LeMoyne?
