Screwed in the ESPN Poll.. Not Ranked |
Lead | |

"Butler was constantly running screens to get their guys shots. And they weren't just one and done. They were set plays with three, four or even five
screens in a row. We don't do nearly enough of that." -rockytopjag; South Alabama Poster

How is Xavier with two losses including one at home to us, ranked higher than Butler? Looking at the vote totals we are at 28 in the coaches poll but we need
to be top 25 so that recruits see us on the ticker and see are name as much as possible. We are getting better recruits by being ranked previous seasons and
the coaches of the big schools are trying to hold us back.

as i said in a previous thread, it takes the voters until the end of january to catch up with reality. they're particularly slow to rank teams that began
the season unranked and unvoted for. it took them forever to recognize drake last year. it took them awhile to recognize southern illinois the year before
that. unless you blow up a preseason tournament, they're not going to notice right away. i wouldn't worry about it. no one remembers that it took drake
and kent state and davidson awhile to get into the rankings. they just remember where they ended up once they did get there. i wouldn't be too anxious to
trade places with some of the teams that are ranked. i'd rather be unranked and good than ranked and not so good at this point in the season. it won't
be long before butler is in there, and once they're in the rankings they'll probably stay there.

I know we do a good job of making teams look bad, but Xavier looked like a team who would place 4th in the Horizion League at BEST! We got hosed in the polls.

Xavier is a good team. The coaches voting in the poll obviously don't have respect for Butler yet, because they dropped Xavier 10 spots after losing. That
is a huge drop after a single loss. The loss to Duke was already factored into the last poll.
Nonetheless, the third straight season (I believe) being ranked in the AP top 25 feels pretty good. |

On the flip side, there were times the last two years where I thought Butler should have fallen further after a loss.....but it's like once you are in the club....it takes a major effort to fall out. It's good that we're in the AP poll. They'll have to do more write ups for us now.

fired up karen wrote: Starting with the PR for this poll... Butler cracks AP Top 25Butler earned its highest ranking ever when it reached No. 8 late last season on the way to a school-record 30 victories and a win in the NCAA tournament. Five of the top six players from that team were seniors, so this was expected to be a rebuilding year for the Bulldogs. Nobody told them. Butler (10-1), coming off a win at Xavier, moved into The Associated Press' Top 25 on Monday, replacing Missouri (10-2) at No. 25. "We had five players coming back, but that went unnoticed because of the seniors who drew so much of the attention had graduated," second-year
coach Brad Stevens said Monday. "But those guys who came back and the new guys never once talked about any goals of being ranked or anything like that.
We're only 11 games into the season, and we have to keep that in perspective that we have the better part of two-thirds of the season to continue to focus
on what's important."

For all of you who think we got screwed... (I don't)
There are some games tonight that could go a long way to helping us out next week (provided we take care of business.) Temple @ #18 Villanova (Temple is very capable of winning this game as I believe Villanova is overrated.) Portland St. @ #21 Baylor (Portland St. is the team that just beat Gonzaga, they're a very good team capable of playing with Baylor. This might be a Catch 22 if they win though, as they'll start receiving a lot more votes.)

Plus we had 6 teams to jump over to get to #25 on ESPN............ only 4 on AP.

I tried to prep everyone for remaining unranked in my "Associated Press, ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Predictions" thread. Apparently that didn't
work...

I ran through the ballots real quickly obviously we were unranked by several voters but also 17-25 by many. The exception is the guy at the San Fran Chronicle
who has us at 12.
