Dunno. But zone defense was first introduced by Frank Lindley of Newton, Kansas, USA.

Westfield. Simple. When you play zone you don't have to play defence (After hectare I am converting to another international term). It's all a part of
the NBA hip hop look. Running and dunking, no passing, posing and... not playing real defence.
In the 2008 summer Olympics, won by the U.S. Coach K. had our guys use their overwhelming athleticism and pressure in the back court. They dominated games with that defence. Our front court defence was pedestrian at best. On offence (there I go again) it was scoring off of steals from the positive and the inability to shot over the zone on the negative. Let's be honest. The typical Sports Center audience wants to see LeBron or Koby making a one inch shot a/k/a dunk in contrast to some great exterior defence where a defender denies an offensive player his "spot" on the floor.

Come on guys the NBA legalized the zone defense because every team spent half the game playing one anyway. The rule had become a joke.

Hayward and Mack have performed well in the U-19 games. When the regular college basketball season starts, I'm sure that the TV Talking Heads will give
them some great props when applicable.
The first three point shot I watched being launched was in an ABA game ....the Indiana Pacers vs. Kentucky (Dampier and Carrier). I cannot remember if the ABA allowed zone defense.

Pitstop. If we can win the World Championship and Hayward and Mack continue to be contributors, the sky is the limit... for promotion, recruiting, attendance.
Can you imagine announcing the starting lineup "at guard, a member of the World Champion..... Gordon....... Shelvin..." Gives me goose bumps. I know
someone is going to say that it distracts from the "team" thing, but if they were my teammates I'd promote the hell out of it.
Regarding the ABA and the three. They outlawed both the zone and man to man in that league... defense? Didn't the Pacers score 186 points in one game? |

Butler should definitely set up a "recognition moment" at a half-time at an exhibition game or something with Gordon and Shelvin temporarily wearing
their USA basketball uniforms and waving to the crowd.
Changing gears here... Regarding international vs. college ball - most interesting rule difference for me is that after the ball hits the rim of the cylinder, it is playable. Butler Basketball Summer School is now in session at Hinkle, Colorado Springs, New Zealand & Italy. |

IHX, I dunno if they ever got 186, but they did help set the scoring record with a 177-135 win over Pittsburgh.
As for Gordon and Shelvin, I would bet that in publications (such as basketball programs), there might be some mention of them on Team USA, but I would doubt they would put it over the loudspeaker during the game or really put it out there for the world to see. That's not the Butler Way, and I doubt Brad (or Gordon or Shelvin) would make it a focal point after this tournament is over. It is definitely something to be proud of, but the results of this tournament aren't going to automatically get them to the second weekend of the NCAAs. I'm sure that they will use this as a building block to next season, and hopefully they'll get the rest they need prior to heading off to Italy (that goes for Nored too). Irish. I'm always trying to get more attention, attendance and recognition for our guys. You are probably right....The Butler Way always wins out.

I think Lithuania caused the U.S. problems because they're a big, physical team. They outrebounded the US 45-31 and had a better field goal percentage.
Hopefully they'll use this as a learning experience and make a statement against Canada, with either Croatia or Puerto Rico waiting in the wings.
Croatia's definitely got some size too, with four guys at 6'10 or taller.

Just think about the non- basketball education that Gordon and Shelvin are receiving in New Zealand (cultures, religions, etc). Gordon and Shelvin earned the right to represent the USA in these games. When they were recruited by Butler, I'll bet that they did not imagine being chosen for these games. I hope that potential Butler recruits are taking note of their success.

It took me forever to adjust my mind and sleeping patterns when I returned to the USA after spending 16 months in Vietnam. Seeds, hang in there. There are only a few games remaining in New Zealand.
