I was surprised to see SVZ get his name called as a starter on Sunday night, but after reading the post-game comments and Woods story, I am not convinced that old #2 will be the starter when Davidson strolls into Hinkle. I haven't seen much discussion as to whether you think this was a sign of things to come or just a sign of Ron still recovering, so I thought I'd share my thoughts and see what you guys think. I think this is Ron's team, and that's the way I prefer it as I am far more comfortable with his decision-making, leadership, and ability to run this offense. While SVZ is a great defensive guard, I'm not sure he's that far ahead of Ron in that area, if at all. So, and pardon me in advance if this has been discussed and I missed it, who do you guys think will be the starter when the season begins? If Ron is rusty coming off the injury, he sure didn't show it on Sunday, at least not enough for SVZ to start ahead of him. Strong starts are important, steady consistency is important, and I trust Ron to provide both. And I'm familiar with the saying, It's not who starts, it's who finishes, but I can tell you that I'd rather have Ron in there in crunch time too.

My personal feel is that if Ron is Healthy, it's his position to lose. However, if Ron isn't fully conditioned, or ready to go 100%, SVZ must be the
starter.
Is Ron ready? I thought that he looked a step slow at times, and looked like he was hurting on a couple occasions. Others didn't have the same impression, including David Woods.

National publicity is good for Butler's program, of course, but remember this: The Website reporters who cover college basketball are compelled to write about something in the off-season, and Butler is the flavor of the month. Such publicity is also a reminder of how outrageous preseason expectations have become for what is essentially a sophomore/junior team. I'm actually more concerned about Butler's fans than the team. |

Start neither and play big...but we have already hit on that a million times. Wish I could think that it would happen, but unfortunately (JMO) I don't
think we will see it. So that arguement is dead.
To these two, I never thought that SVZ was ahead of Ron in any category except maybe getting to the rim...maybe. But there was a reason when Nored got on campus last year he supplanted both SVZ and Hahn, he is just better. Now, as I have said before, the thought of him coming off the bench as just a burst of energy is very enticing to me. But again if that is the case would rather go with a big starting lineup then use him as a change of pace. As far as one vs. the other, who is the better fit to start at PG...Nored if he is ready. If not I have no problem with SVZ starting. |

Willis--The Big argument is not dead--we will certainly see it during the season & likely early. If it succeeds look for more usage as the season goes
along. In the #2 spot I could not argue against either Ron or SVZ, each has unique strengths--also Stigall is lurking. As for who's team it is? Bobby,
it's Shelvin's. jmo

The good part of this argument is Brad has a lot of options to go to during the game. I'm more concerned about who finishes the game than who starts it. If
Ron did not improve his free throw shooting then he will not be closing many games out. I have a feeling Hayward and Mack are going to have the ball in their
hands a lot at the end of games. I have a feeling SVZ and Nored will be splitting a lot of minutes until someone proves they are better.

dogace, I agree with you that we'll see Gordon and Shelvin with the ball in their hands a lot at the end of games. Both are good free throw shooters,
which could certainly keep Nored off the floor, and both are strong with the ball. Last year I felt that no one on the team was stronger with the basketball
in his hands than Shelvin Mack.
62dog, I hope you're right. I would like to see a lineup with Shelvin at the point get a look early in the season, though I'm not convinced this will happen. Mack is a very capable ball handler and a very good distributor, and a big lineup with Mack at the point would create a host of potential matchup problems, especially during league play. As for this being Shelvin's team, maybe you're right, but I feel that Howard--through his work--and Nored are more natural leaders. Maybe I'm wrong, that's just my impression. |

They may have been more natural leaders, but I think we are going to see that this summer really improved both Shlevin and Gordon's leadership. Hell
Shelvin was a captain of that team. The hope of course is that there is a fluid rotation discovered and utilized. It's nice to worry about who plays where
and when, nice depth boys.

Butler had a 10 - 0 start in the first half when Hahn and Nored came into the game at the 16:20 mark and started the second half on a 9 - 3 run when again Hahn
and Nored came into the game at 15:51.
I think Nored played great with a 5 assist and only one turnover game, also seams able to get Hahn some open looks. Nored can also put great pressure on a tired or 2nd team point guard. I think there is little doubt he will be in the games at the end, as long as there is no FT issue. I also would love to see a big line up at some point. |

Brad Stevens is a great leader for the team, but they don't need him on the floor at the end of the game.
 Ron certainly didn't get to grow as much
as a player as we and he probably would have wanted to over the summer. As long as Hahn's shooting well, I think the Nored/Hahn combo makes a lot more
sense than Vanzant/Hahn. Ron can create opportunities for his teammates off the dribble, which Hahn needs in order to get an open shot. Vanzant doesn't
have to create opportunities for his teammates if Mack, Hayward, Veasley and Howard are in there, Mack and Hayward are more than capable. Vanzant can also
cover the quick guards like Nored does so Mack won't have to. I actually wouldn't mind Vanzant or Ron starting, but I don't think that Vanzant and
Hahn need to be in the game at the same time, but it's up to Brad and the coaching staff to make those decisions.
