Both of them spent their first 2 years struggling with injuries and a team that didn't know who it was. In the summer of 2005 they both could have taken the easy way out and followed their classmates out the door. Instead they both just kept working at it. Ligon played basically on one leg that whole season and Crone was the starting center at 6'6". Those two were the leaders of the 2006-2007 team that captured the imagination of the nation. Without them and their determination to succeed maybe we aren't where we are now. This year's team owes a debt of gratitude to all the Bulldogs who came before them, and these two were great examples of what The Butler Way was all about.

But so many people put a lot into the program early on...and now on the brink of the greatest reward. Brad asked me to speak to the team before the season started...I was honored to do so. A great group of young men...and one outstanding coach. I know those that have been around Brad know that he is the real deal...I think everyone in the country is definitely seeing that now. One of my favorite memories has to be working alongside you, Tim Bowen, and Debbie Wiley while experiencing this new beast (at least for BU) the NCAA Tournament. Echoing on what DW said in his Star blog... this goes back to the foundation set by PDTH. After some years of floundering a lot of credit has to be given to Dr. Geoffrey Bannister who hired BC and John Parry... and to JP who at the time made an unconventional decision to promote a 30-something assistant to head coach when BC left thus ushering in the "promote from within" mantra which seems to have worked out quite well. During the 1960's John Bansch of the Indianapolis Star came out with a report critical of Butler in a home basketball game. The next time Hinkle saw John he mentioned that he thought Bansch has ben pretty tough on the kids. Bansch replied that he thought it was in order. Hinkle came back with the brief observation: "You know, kid, as long as I've been coaching basketball, I still can't figure out whether a bad scoring performance by a team is due to a poor offense or a strong defense." Bansch said he carried that thought into every game he covered after that. From Howard Caldwell's Tony Hinkle biography.
